Aldrin was the Lunar Module Pilot of Apollo 11, the first manned mission to land on the moon.

Aldrin’s role as the Lunar Module Pilot of Apollo 11 was critical for the success of the mission. In this role, he was responsible for operating the Eagle lunar module and helping to ensure that its systems were running correctly. He also piloted the Eagle from its launch from the Command and Service Modules to its landing on the moon’s surface, becoming one of two humans to ever set foot on our celestial neighbor.

Aldrin’s commitment to becoming an astronaut is second to none. His career in space started with a doctorate degree at MIT, where he wrote a dissertation focused on how to plan and execute a multi-day mission in space. He went on to serve as an Air Force Officer during the Korean War, where his achievements earned him numerous awards and decorations. After that, he pursued his dream of going into space – which came true when he was selected as part of the third group of astronauts for NASA’s Project Gemini. Aldrin made history again as the Lunar Module Pilot on Apollo 11’s moon landing mission, becoming one of the first humans ever to walk on the lunar surface.

He was the second person to walk on the moon after Neil Armstrong.

On July 20th, 1969, Aldrin became the second person to walk on the moon after astronaut Neil Armstrong. He and Armstrong stepped off of the Eagle lunar module and onto the moon’s surface, making history as part of the Apollo 11 mission. Aldrin has recalled that “the void of space is beautiful but I found out that it was nothing compared to standing on a foreign world for the first time.”

Aldrin continued to explore space even after his time on the moon. He was part of three different spaceflight missions and holds five patents related to spacecraft navigation and communications. Aldrin has dedicated his life to advocating for a more ambitious exploration of the solar system and inspiring others to engage in scientific discovery. In addition to writing several books, he has served as a professor at MIT, a visiting lecturer at other universities, an author, a photographer, and a public speaker.

Aldrin holds a PhD from MIT in Astronautics and Aeronautics.

In 1963, Aldrin earned a Doctor of Science degree in Astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His dissertation was titled “Line-of-Sight Guidance Techniques for Manned Orbital Rendezvous” and was seminal to the development of NASA’s Project Gemini spacecraft. Aldrin also holds Bachelor’s degrees from the US Military Academy and MIT, as well as an honorary doctorate from Purdue University.

After his historic space mission, Aldrin visited 25 countries as an ambassador for NASA.

Aldrin championed the civilian space exploration movement and inspired young minds to reach for the stars. Upon his return from Apollo 11, Aldrin launched an ambitious tour of 25 countries that included England, Jordan, Thailand, India, and South Africa. He gave numerous speeches on behalf of NASA, inspiring fans and future astronauts alike with stories of his historic mission.

Aldrin believed that it was his duty to inspire the next generations of space explorers, and he willingly shared the secrets of the profession. He regaled audiences with accounts of his journey to the moon, including details about their landing on the lunar surface and their special celebration aboard their ship before landing back at Earth. Aldrin represented NASA in a variety of capacities over the course of his tour, from speaking to children’s groups to testifying before government bodies. His mission as an ambassador for NASA was ultimately successful: during his historic tour, he inspired millions around the world with stories of human achievement in space exploration.

He co-authored multiple books about his experience during Project Gemini and Apollo 11 missions.

Buzz Aldrin wrote and co-authored many books about his life and career, including three published works about his experience during the Gemini 12 and Apollo 11 missions. His first book was a best-seller, entitled “Return to Earth”, which documented his time on the Apollo 11 mission. Other books include: “Men from Earth”, which discussed the training process of astronauts and space travel; “Reaching for the Moon” focused on the planning portions of Aldrin’s moonwalk; and “No Dream is Too High”, which tells stories of unsuccessful attempts by himself and other astronauts in hopes of building resilience in young minds.

His books have been received with much enthusiasm from the public and have even inspired several students to pursue a career in space-related technologies. Aldrin even went on to launch a scholarship program that aims to provide its recipients the opportunity to pursue educational and professional opportunities in aerospace engineering, planetary science, robotics, astrobiology, physics or related disciplines. The Buzz Aldrin Space Institute at the Florida Institute of Technology was also established as part of this endeavor.
