This season we hired two professionals. One is familiar with the New York football team inside and outside, and the other is a nationally focused football analyst. Answers important questions as a service to our readers. These teams good yet?
Devin Gordon, author of ESPN and GQ sports and author of “Many Ways to Lose: The True Story of the New York Mets’ Amazin, the Worst Team of Sports,” observed both the Giants and Jets locally. From a focused point of view.
Diante Lee, an NFL analyst at Pro Football Focus, gave a national view.
The Giants (0-3) lost 17-14 at their home in the Atlanta Falcons (1-2) on Sunday.
Insider’s point of view
Last week’s edition introduced the concept of “fun”. This is not only a lot of fun for young teams to see, but it’s also an evolutionary state that is fundamentally terrible in football. He introduced the 2021 Giants as an example of a textbook. The team that the Giants, who lost to the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, was supposed to go around was a fun soccer masterclass.
Like last week, the Giants lost again in the field goal when the time was up, but let’s focus on a particular play. In the middle of the third quarter, the Giants are behind by 7-6, but are driving into the territory of the Falcons and facing serious problems. Third and 4.Daniel Jones makes an audible sound and we are watching at home I was able to hear the chaos on the line of scrimmage. “What is play?” Exclaimed a Giants player. “What is play?”
Whatever the play, it didn’t work. The Giants were flagged for hold and the drive was finished. For the sake of clarity, the game didn’t turn this play on, but if you’re a Giants fan, your confidence has probably turned on.
But with one drive in the fourth quarter, the Giants showed why it’s worth watching every week. Jump ball specialist Kenny Goraday made a pass-interfering call in the end zone, and Sake One Berkeley crossed the mountain on three floors for the first touchdown. Since 2019, Jones has run as a keeper for a two-point conversion. They held a 14-7 lead in the fourth quarter, and cornerback Adoree’Jackon dropped an interception of a potential game seal on Matt Ryan’s pass in the end zone. Sure, the touchdowns that connect the Falcons games came after a few plays … but think I was intrigued.
Verdict: They are bad but convincing.
All Giants roster players are advised to bring jogging shoes for practice this week. There is a lap to lap after a terrible defeat to the Falcons on Sunday. Atlanta kicker Younghoe Koo’s goodbye field goal guaranteed the Giants to be 0-3 at the bottom of the NFC East.
The Giants should have had a pleasant victory at home in the 10 days to prepare for the defense, which scored a total of 80 points in the first two contests. Leave it to the Giants’ attack line to end the game with the least effective rush attack (3.7 yards per carry) that the Falcons faced throughout the season.
Jones was fired only once, but the pass protection unit continues to lose one-on-one matches. The overtaking match was able to face Washington in the second week, but it was much harder to get a downfield chance against the Falcons defense, which has much less one-to-one defense coverage.
The Giants defense seems to have receded from the 2020 season to the present, but it wasn’t a major issue for the team on Sunday until the final drive of the game. With a defeat and sack effort, Leonard Williams still appears to be one of the five best interior defensive linemen in the league, and this week the coverage was better (this is against Ryan). Yes, his arm is close to the NFL backup) —but at this stage of his career) — but if the Giants can’t move the ball in the attack, improving defense isn’t important.
I tremble when I think about what this attack would look like against the much better defense on the road that New Orleans Saints would come next. This season, the baby in 2020 is shaped to step back a few steps after moving forward.
Verdict: Unable to monitor and heading in the wrong direction.
