Three US service members were killed by a drone attack on a military base carried out by “radical militant groups supported by Iran” near the Syrian border, the White House announced on Sunday.

President Joe Biden said the United States would “hold accountable all those responsible at a time and in a manner of our choosing.”

U.S. defense officials said 25 other service members were injured in the attack on a military base in northeastern Jordan. A Jordanian government spokesperson told public broadcaster al-Mamlaka that the attack took place against the US base at Al-Tanf, on the Syrian side of the border.

This is the first time that American soldiers have been killed since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

The US and UK have coordinated joint attacks on Houthi targets in Yemen in response to the Iran-backed rebel group’s attacks on ships sailing in the Red Sea, a key shipping lane for global trade .

But the broadening military effort has raised fears that the United States and its allies could be drawn into a broader regional war.

U.S. forces have also launched several strikes against Iranian-backed Iraqi militants in response to rocket and drone attacks on U.S. troops in Syria and Iraq.

The Houthi rebels said their attacks were a response to Israeli bombing of the Gaza Strip since the start of the war against Hamas in October. The Houthis have carried out more than 30 attacks on international and commercial ships since mid-November.
