France announced on Friday that it would immediately recall US ambassador Philip Etienne in protest of President Biden’s announcement of an agreement to provide Australia with a nuclear submarine without consulting French authorities.
The French Foreign Minister said in a statement that the decision was made by French President Emmanuel Macron.
“At the request of the President of the Republic, we have decided to immediately bring the two ambassadors of the United States and Australia back to Paris,” said Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian. “This exceptional decision is justified by the extraordinary significance of the announcements made by Australia and the United States on September 15.”
