It’s official – the Golden Joystick for the “best gaming hardware of all time” on the gaming PC’s shelf, a title commemorating 50 years of the gaming industry. Even better, the CEO of Valve, Gabe Neual, came forward to accept the award on behalf of PCs everywhere, does that mean he is now officially the parent / guardian of the platform?
Here during his acceptance speech Golden Joystick Awards 2021“The relentless innovation in PC gaming hardware has greatly benefited gamers and developers,” says Newal. Although this statement sounds a bit silly, it is based on the fact that modern consoles like the Xbox Series X are becoming more like gaming PCs.
It’s weird to see PC platforms classified as singular hardware types, because today’s monstrous RTX 3080 armed machines are the world of their 1980s IBM ancestors – especially when we take them out in armor suits. In fact, you might argue that the Amiga 500 and Commodore 64 are also technically personal computers, but in reality they are listed as separate award nominees. Nevertheless, the award recognizes the importance of the platform to a greater or lesser extent and its contribution to the video game industry throughout the year.
The shortlist of the best gaming hardware includes the likes of Super Nintendo, Sega Mega Drive and PlayStation 2, so it’s safe to say that the competition was fierce. Having said that, here is a list of each gaming gadget nominee and their status below:
- PlayStation 2
- Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES)
- PlayStation 4
- Game machine
- Xbox 360
- Fantasy dream
- Nintendo 64
- Nintendo DS
- Nintendo Entertainment System (NES)
- Nintendo GameCube
- Sega Genesis (Mega Drive)
- Game boy
- Game Boy Advance
- Amiga 500
- Sega Saturn
- ZX spectrum
- Commodore 64
- Attic 2600
One thing is for sure, PCs and the best graphics card technology will continue to shape the gaming industry as a whole. While companies like the PlayStation still dominate the console market, new projects like the PlayStation PC and the success of the Xbox game pass for the PC suggest a multiplatform future that further obscures gaming hardware lines.
