If you were curious about whether the second season of Good Omens would focus on the history of angel Aziraphale and demon Crowley or continue their present-day relationship, the answer is yes.
Good Omens season 2 takes place after the events of the first season and the corresponding book. Aziraphale and Crowley are adjusting to a new life after preventing the apocalypse. However, the season also includes extended flashback sequences called “minisodes.”
These “minisodes” are not actually that “mini” – the longest one takes up most of its episode time. They all occur in the past and are mostly unrelated to the main modern-day storyline, where the archangel Gabriel appears at Aziraphale’s door, naked and with no memory.
In fact, these flashback sequences in Good Omens season 2 almost feel like they belong to a different version of the show, where episodic adventures from Aziraphale and Crowley’s past are explored. It’s possible that these flashbacks were once rough ideas outlined by Neil Gaiman and co-author Terry Pratchett. If they were presented as a separate series of enjoyable standalone episodes, they could be great.

However, within the structure of the season, they tend to divert attention from the main plot, causing it to progress slowly. This can be frustrating because the central plotline is already captivating.
Aziraphale and Crowley are captivating characters, and any screen time featuring them is delightful. Watching them interact throughout their thousands of years of misadventures is especially engaging. Michael Sheen and David Tennant portray these characters perfectly, with their natural chemistry making even mundane interactions wonderful.
Given their nature as a demon and an angel, what may seem mundane to them is fantastical to us, whether it’s orchestrating events in the Book of Job or engaging in peculiar activities in Scotland. These flashbacks provide insight into critical moments that shaped the relationship between Crowley and Aziraphale into what it is today.
Good Omens season 2 goes beyond the singular episode adventures and delves into the fate of the universe. Aziraphale and Crowley are once again faced with figuring out what Gabriel is trying to warn them about while also keeping him hidden from the watchful eyes of heaven and hell.
Additionally, they find themselves in a contrived situation where they must play matchmaker for two shopkeepers across the street. This setup is enjoyable, but the minisodes tend to complicate things as they rarely contribute much to the episodes other than offering insights into small moments.
For fans who adore Aziraphale and Crowley, these flashbacks provide a rich history and meaningful moments in their relationship. However, the minisodes and the main present-day plotline both struggle to progress their relationship significantly. While the minisodes are the most enjoyable part of the season, they also limit the potential of the modern-day plot.
The desire for more character exploration conflicts with the wish for a stronger focus on the main storyline. Despite this peculiar structure, fans who love these characters will likely appreciate the available content, even if they deserve more attention and development.
