The 65th Grammy Awards saw the transformation of Crypto.com Arena into Harry’s House, as Harry Styles won the much-coveted Album of the Year award. In the press room after his win, Styles expressed his feelings about the recognition, stating, “More than anything, it just kind of feels like validation that you’re on the right path. When we get in the studio and begin a record we just make the music that we want to make, and it’s really nice to feel like that is the right thing to do.”
Styles, who also won the Best Pop Vocal Album award, talked about his journey with the album. The album, which was released in May, debuted at number one on The Billboard 200 chart and was performed at various shows and residencies across the country during his recently concluded North American tour. The artist expressed his love for both the album-making process and performing it, stating, “I’ve always loved performing so much; it’s always been my favorite part of working in music. And I’ve been able to really fall in love with the album-making process and now that is one love of my life and playing it is another one.”
The singer gave credit to his fans for creating an environment that allowed him to freely express himself and perform his music. “It’s amazing to see the way songs that mean so much to me, to see how much they mean to other people when you’re playing for them. In terms of that I’m so grateful for my fans, who’ve created an environment where I feel like I can make what I want to make. I feel so free when performing. That’s a real gift and I love it,” Styles said.
He also acknowledged that the energy and atmosphere created in live music performances were largely due to the fans. “The atmosphere that is created in live music and the experiencing of that… when there’s someone on stage it feels like that’s what that person is doing. And in reality, I very much feel like the fans create that atmosphere for me, and the room is this energy that almost feels like it’s too magical for me to take any responsibility for,” he stated.
Styles, along with his co-writers Kid Harpoon and Tyler Johnson, continued writing throughout the tour and will likely continue doing so in the future. The singer believes that continuously writing helps to maintain the intention behind the music they create. He stated, “We’ve always tried to not really stop writing because it feels like you have this big stop and then you come back to it and it can feel like you’re trying to prove something or follow something up. So we are always writing and like to attempt to have the same intention behind what we are making.”
When talking about the award, Styles emphasized that there is no “best” in music. “I think on nights like tonight it’s important to remember that there’s no such thing as ‘best’ in music,” he said. “I don’t think any of us sit in the studio making decisions based on what’s going to get us one of these. This is really, really kind. I’m so grateful.” Other artists who were nominated for Album of the Year included Abba, Adele, Bad Bunny, Beyoncé, Mary J. Blige, Brandi Carlile, Coldplay, Kendrick Lamar, and Lizzo.
