Daryl Mitchell was not even in consideration for a berth in the starting XI until an injury ruled Henry Nicholls out of the first Test. Mitchell proved to be more than just an able replacement as he scored a resilient century in the second innings for the Kiwis before an inexplicable batting collapse. The right-hander backed his century in the first Test at Lords with another brilliant 190 in the second Test, which prompted a response from his compatriot Neesham.

England won the toss and opted to bowl in the second Test, but soon they were regretting their decision as the green pitch in Nottingham provided little swing to their star bowling duo of James Anderson and Stuart Broad. But Ben Stokes struck at crucial junctures to keep New Zealand in check before Daryl Mitchell and Tom Blundell joined hands at the crease.
The batting duo, who were the thorn in the flesh for the English bowlers in the second innings of the Lord’s Test, forced them into submission again with their 236-run stand. Blundell reached a well-deserved century in the innings after missing out by just four runs in the previous Test.
