Oligarch Mikhail Fridman has demanded a “allowance” from the United Kingdom so that he can take a taxi and buy food.
London-based businessmen were one of the long list of mega-rich Russians sanctioned following Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.
Friedman’s value was estimated at £ 7.8 billion before the war began, but he no longer has access to that cash.
His credit card has been blocked and he is forbidden to travel to other European countries.
In an interview with the Spanish newspaper El Pais, he compared his situation to “house arrest.”
The billionaire lamented eating at home in his £ 130m mansion in Hampstead Heath instead of going to a restaurant. He even said that he should be given money to “take a taxi” and “buy food.”
Friedman founded Russia’s largest private bank, Alfa Bank, and previously headed the investment group Letter One.
The 57-year-old had previously told Bloomberg that he needed to apply to the British government to receive about £ 2,500 a month.
But he is afraid of how far this money can go. He said:’British authorities have to allocate me a certain amount so that I can take a taxi and buy food, but when you look at the cost of living in London it is very It will be a limited amount.
“I still don’t know if it’s enough to lead a normal life without excess. No one can take me to a restaurant.
“I have to eat at home and I am virtually under house arrest.”
Friedman was born in Ukraine in 1964, run by the Soviet Union, and moved to Moscow to study.
He built his career from washing dishes and was soon on par with the Russian elite, including Vladimir Putin.
He warned that the sanctions could leave British Russians back in Moscow and “have no choice” other than to be “faithful” to Putin.
The UK Government covers more than 1,000 entities. Polina Kovaleva, the “unofficial” stepdaughter of Foreign Minister Sergeĭ Viklov, has recently been added to the list.
Kovaleva freezes assets and bans travel from or to the United Kingdom.
Her mother is believed to be Svetlana Poliakova, 51, a strong member of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and is said to be Viklov’s “other” wife.
