Writer Anuja Chauhan thinks Dil bekaraar it is so far the best adaptation of his work. Based on her novel Those Pricey Thakur Girls, the web series has a laid-back setting of 40-year-old Delhi, which is struggling to shake off the past and is still a few years away from liberalization. It is scheduled to premiere on Disney Plus Hotstar on November 26.
“I wrote this book in 2010 when this whole concept of 80s nostalgia didn’t even exist. After 3-4 years, people started talking about DD and those shows. Now in 2021 I feel the need to clarify that I was here first, I am not following a trend, I created a trend ”. Anuja Chauhan Indianexpress.com said when asked if the show’s nostalgic value will turn out to be an asset.
Dil Bekaraar is a lighthearted drama that shows the Thakur family’s day-to-day life as they battle their ideological conflicts in the days of telegrams, telephones and Gold-Spot, with lots of references from yesteryear to RD Burman, Nazia. Hassan and even Hum Log.
Anuja said that the story revolving around five sisters got a larger canvas to portray their trajectory. “Those Pricey Thakur Girls is that kind of book, with so many sisters, so many characters that it demanded space. I’m glad we have that. “
However, the writer agreed that weaving the stories of five sisters, each with their own individual graphic, was a challenge. She said that the way female energy bounces off each other and the little dynamics come into play was “written from deep knowledge rather than deep math.”
“I have sisters, aunts, nieces. I am writing with that authority. But when I gave the first draft to my husband, he said I’m so confused and I don’t know who is who. So I thought I would name them alphabetically ”, he revealed.
Dil bekaraar stars Raj Babbar, Poonam Dhillon, Sahher Bambba, Akshay Oberoi, Padmini Kohlapure, Chandrachur Singh, and others. In the trailer, we saw Sahher as a DD newsreader while Akshay plays a journalist. Audiences may get a glimpse of her sweet 80s romance, but her love life soon runs into trouble when Sahher discovers that Akshay was the one who wrote a bad review about her in his newspaper.
Dil Bekaraar happens to be the second adaptation of Those Pricey Thakur Girls. It was previously made into a TV show titled Dilli Wali Thakur Girls (2015) on & TV. Anuja said the Disney Plus Hotstar series creative team gave her confidence that they will keep the vibe of the original story intact without bargaining with the period in which the story is set. “They understood the little details well. They even put some very nice things that I hadn’t written and I love that, ”he shared.
But how important is it for showrunners to keep the writer informed before taking cinematic liberties? Anuja says that it is better to always return to the author. However, holding on to it is not a good idea. “It’s good to be there for them, but you have to deliver the baby. You can’t keep sticking with the baby. Participate only when someone comes to you for a consultation. Hotstar came to me when they were stuck and needed clarity. So that was a good place to be instead of sticking your nose in all the time. “
Being a supporter of supporting female characters who are strong, imperfect, and fiery in her books, Anuja also had her say. She said, “A girl should be like this. You watch those movies where you have to leave your brain at home like a Kabir Singh Preeti. Where is the imperfect and the fire there? “
Anuja Chauhan has also been involved in some films as a screenwriter, including Arjun Kapoor’s protagonist Sardar Ka Grandson, feels that a book is any day better as the writer has all the power without obstacles like budgets, study and others. Anuja’s book The Zoya Factor was previously adapted into a film of the same name starring Sonam Kapoor and Dulquer Salmaan. His other work, Battle of Bittora, was also in the works, but is on hold. She said: “The Battle of Bittora shouldn’t happen right now, not for another 10 years, given the current political scenario.”
Anuja also chose her other job which she deemed suitable for adaptations. “I think Baaz is beautiful. It’s like a cinematographer’s delight. It’s about an Air Force fighter pilot in 1971. So, very consciously, I gave the rights to Yash Raj Films because YRF has that amount of money, muscle and passion, and Baaz needs arrogance. Maddock has the rights to Club You To Death. It’s a murder mystery. I think they will do well because they do dark humor and suspense, fun and romance very well. “
Stating that Dil Bekaraar has all her heart, she concluded by sharing her reaction when she watched the series. “You start to see it with your heart in your mouth because you are so worried. But, in the middle of the third episode, I felt quite happy. I’m very happy.”
