Makar Sankranti Date 2024

The day after Lohri, in mid-January, is the Hindu harvest festival, Makar Sankranti. People come together to prepare unique and delicious dishes, fly kites, participate in generous activities and worship the Sun God on this joyous day.

Makar Sankranti honors the sun by moving the zodiac sign from Sagittarius to Capricorn, however, it has other names in different parts of India. This event honors the sun’s movement north, signaling the end of harsh winters and the start of longer days.

As it happens on this date throughout leap years, Makar Sankranti will be observed on January 15, 2024. Usually, it happens on January 14 in years when there is no leap year. Punya Kaal is expected to start at 7:15 a.m. and end at 5:46 p.m., according to Drik Panchang. On January 15, from 7:15 a.m. to 9 a.m., the Maha Punya Kala is scheduled.

How and why was Makar Sankranti 2024 celebrated?

The celebration has seasonal and religious significance. The longer days that followed the change of the Sun were often thought to herald the arrival of a new season, a season of warmer weather. This was interpreted as a positive and hopeful indication.

Makar Sankranti is a day of blessings for worshiping Surya Deva, the Sun God, according to the Hindu calendar. Believers bathe in sacred waters to atone for their sins and ensure prosperity. They also respect livestock and carry out charitable acts.

Sankranti is the day when the deceased ascends to heaven. Some observe it as Uttarayana Day, while others commemorate it to create celebrations. Sweets like til and gur ladoos are very popular. Every twelve years, people gather for the famous Kumbh Mela, a large-scale pilgrimage.

People provide their married daughters with kitchen utensils as well as charitable donations. It is said that this day would bring good luck if a family participates in humanitarian activities and helps the less fortunate. A swarm of colorful kites flying in the winter morning sky is one of the most colorful sights to see during the Makar Sankranti holidays.

Many places also host tournaments for kites. Flying kites high in the sky, closer to what some believe to be heaven, is a joyful activity that many consider a way to thank the gods.
