The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially revealed the roster for the forthcoming Asia Cup tournament. The squad announcement has brought few surprises, as the well-known figures have successfully secured their positions. Continuing his captaincy role, Rohit Sharma will lead the team, while the role of vice-captaincy has been entrusted to Jasprit Bumrah.
Notably, Shreyas Iyer, who was sidelined due to injury for a considerable portion of India’s matches this year, is making a comeback to the team. Another notable return is KL Rahul, who has also regained his place in the squad. Recognizing Tilak Varma’s consistent performances in T20Is, he has been granted a spot in the One Day International (ODI) squad.
Scheduled to commence on August 30, the Asia Cup’s inaugural match will witness Pakistan facing off against Nepal in Multan.
India’s Asia Cup Squad Composition
Opening the innings will be Captain Rohit Sharma alongside Shubman Gill. Ishan Kishan, who capitalized on the opportunity during the ODI series against West Indies by securing three consecutive half-centuries, serves as a reliable backup opener. Following his decent performance in the West Indies tour, the team’s hopes rest on Rohit Sharma to deliver a strong performance in the Asia Cup. Shubman Gill also exhibited commendable form in the limited-overs series against West Indies, scoring an impressive 85 runs in the third ODI.
The middle-order segment of the Indian team is anchored by Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, and Suryakumar Yadav. Virat Kohli will take the No.3 batting position, followed by Shreyas Iyer at No.4. KL Rahul is anticipated to bat at No.5. Although Suryakumar Yadav’s success in T20Is hasn’t quite translated into ODIs, he has retained his place in the squad.

The all-around capabilities of the team will be reinforced by Ravindra Jadeja, Hardik Pandya, and Axar Patel. Jadeja and Pandya are assured selections, with Axar Patel potentially entering the playing lineup if the conditions favor spin in Sri Lanka.
The bowling contingent will consist of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Mohammed Shami, forming a formidable pace attack. Accompanying them will be Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal, the duo responsible for the spin bowling duties. With Jadeja’s inclusion, only one among Kuldeep and Chahal will secure a position in the final team.
In a nutshell, the Indian squad for the Asia Cup embodies a blend of experienced campaigners and promising talents, poised to take on the challenges of the tournament. The team’s performance will undoubtedly be under the spotlight as they aim to secure victory in the forthcoming matches.
