According to the messenger running the business, Facebook’s adoption of an interconnection between Messenger and Instagram surpasses expectations.
In an interview, Head of Facebook’s Messenger, Stan Chudnowski, said, “Our expectations are beating in terms of how fast and how many people we’re upgrading.”
In particular, the company told CNBC that more than 60% of eligible users on Instagram updated the new experience, which allows them to exchange messages with people on Messenger. This is the first time Facebook has provided a figure on the rate of adoption of the update.
In March 2019, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced plans to allow cross-app messaging between Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp. From Facebook’s perspective, allowing people to exchange messages in applications removes a friction point – the idea that not everyone knows which app to use – leading to increased message usage. However, Facebook today does not make much money from advertising in its messaging app.
Facebook began rolling out cross-app communication between users of Messenger and Instagram in September 2020, but still shied away from integrating WhatsApp into MIX. Before this happens, Facebook will have to build end-to-end encryption in Messenger, as WhatsApp already has this feature. According to the Facebook spokesperson, this update will not expire until 2022.
Facebook no longer breaks individual usage figures for each app, but in 2017 the company said that Messenger had more than 1.3 billion monthly users, in 2018 it said Instagram had more than 1 billion, and in 2020 it It is said that WhatsApp has more than 2 billion users.
The adoption of Instagram and Messenger has increased confidence for Chudnowski and his team, as they build interoperability.
Chudnowski said, “The fact is that people are upgrading on Instagram at the rate of upgrading.
Facebook says that according to its research, 70% of Americans use three or more messaging apps. One-third of those users have a hard time remembering where certain conversation threads are according to Facebook. This is why the company says it is building cross-app communications.
“A large percentage of them don’t really know where to go to talk to a specific person,” he said. “As a result of that, you’re sending fewer messages.”
Chudnowski said Facebook’s Messenger service could serve more users if Apple opened up its iOS ecosystem, allowing iPhone users to choose their default messaging apps.
“When it comes down to messaging apps, we’re very supportive of the approach that people should be able to choose which app is the default app on their phone, so their priority is really respected,” he said.
Right now, iPhone users should use the company’s iMessage app for texting their friends. This is in contrast to Google’s Android operating system, which allows users to set up other messaging services, including Facebook’s Messenger, as their default app for sending messages.
Chudnowski said that iPhone users who prefer Messenger over Apple’s iMessage app because they change that default and they have to refrain from using Apple.
“We don’t necessarily think that’s how it should be, but we’re trying to play within the rules of the ecosystem and we have to respect all the rules that the platform puts on us, although we think it’s going to give people Puts it in a disadvantaged position, ”stated.
