The Pikmin series has always been a fan favorite, but despite the excellent review scores in all three mainline games, the series has never sold out. As a result, Pikmin 4 has always been in balance as Nintendo is considering whether the series is worth continuing.
This was stated in 2015 by series creator, Shigeru Miyamoto Pickmin 4 “Very close to completion”, fans began to believe that a new game was coming soon. Why is it that Miyamoto was actually referring to Aho! Pikmin, the launch title of the new Nintendo 2DS XL which launched back in 2017. When asked about the development of Pikmin 4 two years later, Miyamoto responded: “I have been told by PR not to say anything about it, but I can tell you that it is making progress. ”
Since 2017, we haven’t heard anything about Pikmin 4, yet there is hope for fans. Pikmin 3 Deluxe, an enhanced port of the Wii U version, launched on the Nintendo Switch in October. If the Pikmin 3 Deluxe sells well, it could be a crucial factor in whether Nintendo decides to build a fourth game in the series.
When is the release date of Pikmin 4?
It is unknown at this time what he will do after leaving the post. If we look at the release patterns of each game, it may give us an indication of when the next Pikmin game may launch.
Pikmin returned in 2001 with the launch title of GameCube. Three years later, Nintendo released the Pikmin 2, which was well received by critics and sold just over a million copies. The next mainline game in the series will not come until 2013, nine years after Pikmin 2. Pikmin 3 also sold over a million copies after launching on Nintendo’s best-selling console.
Excluding any re-releases and 2DS standalone sequels, we’ll get another Pikmin game in the next few years. Notably, Pikmin 3 was supposed to be the launch title for the Wii U but it was delayed. If the Nintendo Switch Pro rumors come true, Nintendo could save Pikmin 4 to launch a new console.
Did Pikmin 3 Deluxe sell well enough?
Fans have speculated that the success of Pikmin 3 Deluxe will determine the future of Pikmin 4. If that happened then things would get worse. The physical sales of the Pikmin 3 Deluxe in the UK are 18.5% lower than the sales of the first week of the Wii U version. This cannot tell the whole picture, as the percentage of digital sales is higher than the total sales that Pikmin 3 launched in 2013.
Nintendo is refusing to share digital sales numbers, so we don’t know how many good games have been sold on eShop. The Pikmin series has just reached five million sales overall, so Nintendo would not expect the Pikmin 3 Deluxe to top the UK charts. That being said, most people are hoping that the Pikmin 3 Deluxe will sell better than the Wii U version due to the installed base of the Nintendo Switch.
Is Pikmin 4 leaking?
The last official word we heard from Nintendo regarding Pikmin 4 was Miyamoto in 2017. It’s been three years since Miyamoto claimed that development on the Pikmin 4 is in progress, yet we haven’t seen or heard anything yet. It is possible that Nintendo has decided to start all the progress in the game completely from scratch, just like Metroid Prime 4. Nintendo runs a tight ship, so we didn’t see any leaks until late.
And that’s exactly what we know about Pikmin 4. If you’ve enjoyed this guide, why not take a look at our Pikmin 3 Deluxe review? John Mundy gave the game eight out of ten points. “Pikmin 3 Deluxe is another comprehensive re-release with a welcome multiplayer component,” says Mundi. “It’s a shame Nintendo didn’t polish it with the shine it deserves.”
