Shikhar Dhawan, India’s stand-in captain for the ODI series against New Zealand thinks they are well on track in terms of preparation for the World Cup 2023.
The left-handed opening batter has been leading the second-string Indian side in absence of Rohit Sharma for the past year. He was given the role due to this experience and leadership qualities witnessed during the IPL.
In 2021, the southpaw became the oldest Indian player (35 years and 225 days) to lead the ODI side. Since then, under his captaincy, the Men in Blue have tasted victories on seven out of nine occasions.
When talked about his personal form, Shikhar Dhawan has slammed 567 runs in 16 innings at an average of 40.50, with five fifties in 2022. Along with Shubman Gill, he has given stable starts to the Indian team.
Dhawan will be a key player for the ODI World Cup 2023 team in the top order. However, the experienced campaigner will need to be consistent in his performances to cement his place as an opener.
