Near Springfield, Missouri (KY3)-According to the Greene County Security Officer’s office, the Springfield Fire Department’s bomb handling team discovered a “potential explosion device” by two fishermen on Lake McDaniel on Sunday morning. Was recovered.
The investigation is ongoing and authorities say there is no threat to the community.
Two fishermen discovered a suspicious device on Sunday morning near Lake McDaniel during magnetic fishing, an activity looking for metal objects submerged in lakes, rivers and other bodies of water. They found a device that they believed was a grenade and warned authorities to the scene.
The Greene County Security Office, the Springfield Fire Department Bomb Disposal Team, and the Springfield City Utility all responded to the bridge near Lake McDaniel. After securing the area, the bomb squad removed the device from the lake and took precautions to explode it.
James Newton, a fisherman who frequently fishes magnets around Ozarks, said he was surprised by his findings on Sunday.
“I was a little shocked, and I was very nervous and shivering. Everyone around me was shivering,” Newton said.
No injuries have been reported and the scene is clear. It’s unclear if the device is related to criminal activity, but the Green County Sheriff’s Office is in charge of the investigation.
Additional details are limited, but will be updated as more information becomes available.
