Texas coach Steve Sarkian said Monday that Casey Thompson would start quarterback against Rice this weekend after an inconsistent performance of the Hudson Card, which lost to Arkansas 40-21 over the weekend.
Cards, freshmen in red shirts, will see time to play against owls.
“I think it’s good for Hudson to take a little deeper breath from last week’s game,” Sarkian said. “The point is not how to perform every play, but to control the offense down the field and score points. I think Casey is in a good position to do that.”
With Texas dominated from the beginning, Razorbucks led 16-0 in halftime on Saturday night. Longhorns (1-1) punted on 6 of the first 7 drives. Their seventh missed a field goal.
Sarkian said the card moved too fast in his first year as a coach for Longhorns.
“I couldn’t protect him early in the game, but he found it a bit annoying and missed some opportunities,” he said.
The card was pulled out on the last drive of the third quarter and Texas finished 33-7. Thompson led two Longhorns scoring drives in the fourth quarter, both limited by his hasty touchdown.
