Daniil Medvedev won his first Grand Slam title on Sunday, beating the world’s number one Novak Djokovic in a straight set in the US Open Men’s Singles Final. The 25-year-old Medvedev won 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 games. For Russian tennis stars, winning on the third anniversary of their marriage was sweeter. After the victory, Medvedev said he had no choice but to win the US Open title because his wife didn’t have time to get a present.
“I want to finish the speech with a special note. It’s the third anniversary for me and my wife. I couldn’t think of a present during the tournament, so when I went to the final, I thought I needed it. To find the present early. “When I won, Medvedev thought I had to win this match because I didn’t have time to get a present if I lost.”
The official Instagram handle of the US Open posted a video of a sweet note to Medvedev’s wife, captioning “Daniil Medvedev got himself the best wedding anniversary gift.”
In the summit clash, Djokovic dropped the first set 4-6 after two unforced errors from Serbia gave Medvedev a quick break.
In the second set, Djokovic had three early breakpoints, but couldn’t be capitalized because the Russians were able to hold his serve. Medvedev broke in the fifth game and took set 6-4.
Distracted by the spectators at Arthur Ashe Stadium, Medvedev double-faulted at championship points, putting his forehand on the net and taking a break, leaving Djokovic in the match.
Medvedev re-entered the match 5-4 and double-faulted on his second match point, but only crossed the line two hours and 16 minutes later on his third chance with the winner of the service.
