Delhi CM and Aam Aadmi Party Convenor Arvind Kejriwal
Buoyed by victory in the Punjab Assembly polls, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday posed a new challenge for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as he challenged the BJP to conduct and win civic polls in the national capital on time.
Speaking to reporters outside the assembly, Kejriwal exuded confidence that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will oust the BJP from power in the MCD if elections are held on time. Kejriwal then said that he would quit politics if his Aam Aadmi Party lost in the civic polls.
The AAP leader said, “If BJP conducts MCD elections now and wins, we will quit politics.”
After a resounding victory in the Punjab Assembly elections, AAP expects a similar performance in the civic polls in Delhi. AAP, which came to power in the national capital in 2015, has been vocal against the BJP after the Delhi State Election Commission postponed elections to three municipal corporations (South Delhi Municipal Corporation, North Delhi Municipal Corporation and East Delhi Municipal Corporation). earlier this month.
The North and South Delhi Municipal Corporations have 104 wards each. East Delhi Municipal Corporation has 64 wards. All three are currently ruled by the BJP.
Meanwhile, the Union Cabinet on Tuesday gave its approval to a bill for the merger of three municipal corporations in Delhi. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (Amendment) Bill is likely to be introduced in the ongoing budget session of Parliament.
The development could add to the ongoing political tussle between the BJP and the AAP ahead of the high-stakes civic polls in the country’s capital.
